Professor Obunge obtained a degree in BSc Biochemistry in 1979 from the Ahmadu Bello University, Nigeria. He proceeded to study Medicine and Surgery (MD, 1982-89) at the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.  He graduated with summa cum laude. In 1991 he was employed by the University of Port Harcourt in the Department of Medical Microbiology and Parasitology and was seconded to the University of Port

Harcourt TeachingHospital where he completed his residency program and successfully became Fellow of theWest African College of Physician (FWACP) in 1997. He obtained a PhD in Public Health and Microbiology at the University of Rome in 2009. While on sabbatical in 2009 Orikomaba Obunge served as Director of Clinical Laboratory Services at the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria and on his second sabbatical in 2016 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences at the Rivers State University. He serves as a member of several state and national technical committees. He was promoted to the rank of a Professor in 2012. He is well published in infectious diseases and has been a principal investigator in several collaborative research projects.
